Why Research Matters — And Why HBCL Is All In

It’s easy to assume we know why people do or don’t do certain things but assumptions can lead to ineffective interventions, wasted resources, and missed opportunities. That’s why HBCL puts research first: to replace guesswork with genuine understanding. We are committed to evidence-based approaches that dig into why people act as they do and how to guide behaviour towards better outcomes.  Whether it’s exploring how habits form, or devising strategies to influence how children learn and behave, HBCL’s work blends academic rigour with real-world relevance.

What our research looks like: beyond theory

We undertake many different types of research including:

  • Mixed-method social science (both quantitative and qualitative).
  • Intervention design and piloting, to test whether proposed changes influence behaviour before scaling them up.
  • Impact assessment and evaluation, to check whether the interventions have the intended effect, not just in numbers, but in narratives, attitudes, and long-term change.

Why it matters: behaviour change for people, other animals, and the planet we share

Human behaviour is at the root of many of our shared challenges: environmental sustainability, animal welfare, human wellbeing. That means understanding behaviour,  what motivates people, what blocks change, is crucial if we want to build a better future.

Our door is open

Research doesn’t have to cause long delays in planning activities or be a massive undertaking. Even if resources and time are tight, HBCL can suggest “quick and dirty” ways to carry out rapid research that still meaningfully informs your work.

We welcome collaboration, whether you’re an organisation, researcher, or individual with a project idea. We offer support in research design, intervention planning, evaluation, and even training to embed behavioural science in your work from start to finish.
